The legendary location is the oldest restaurant in Europe and is one of the oldest walls in Salzburg. In fact, even Faust is said to have visited the &#8220;Stiftskeller&#8221; in person.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1594118036359{margin-right: 20px !important;margin-left: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;hyphenate&#8221;]The Stiftskulinarum is situated in the heart of Salzburg old town in the monastery complex of the Benedictine archabbey of St. Peter. In the year 803, the St. Peter \u201cabbey cellar\u201d was mentioned in the records for the first time by Alcuin of York, a courtier of Charlemagne. In the 11th century, the focus was on the wine trade: Leopold VI the Glorious took the monastery of St. Peter under his protection and permitted the export of 40 wagon loads of wine from Austria per year and made a promise. It was in 1517 that Abbot Wolfgang Walcher built a rock cellar with access to the abbey court.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;hyphenate&#8221;]The excavated rocks were used in the construction of the mill at the abbey bakery. In 1527 the abbot had Chillian Pitricher the wine cellar extended by a second rock cellar. Waggoners and craftsmen received a \u201cwine penny\u201d or \u201chouse drink\u201d for their work. So a wine tavern gradually turned into a hotel. In the years soon after 1900 Abbot Willibald Hauthaler began to renovate the Peter cellar \u2013 it was at this time that the \u201cWillibald Arcades\u201d were also built. So step by step the rooms were adapted to the requirements of the times &#8211; so it\u2019s a place whose walls are sure to be hiding more than one exciting story.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;main-center&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221; el_class=&#8221;dontshowmobile&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;zitat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1200-year tradition\u2026<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"timeline-container-ag\">\n<div class=\"timeline\">\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">ESTABLISHED in 803 AD<\/h2>\n<p>First documented mention of St Peter\u2019s Stiftskeller by the scholar Alcuin of York, one of Emperor Charlemagne\u2019s advisors. Our restaurant is therefore considered to be the oldest inn in Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1300<\/h2>\n<p>St Peter\u2019s Stiftskeller enters the history of literature thanks to a 14th century poet and composer known as \u2018The Monk of Salzburg\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1510<\/h2>\n<p>The cellar area is significantly extended, and considered by Faust to be a place of quality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1720<\/h2>\n<p>The Stiftskeller changes, as patrons now include nobility, clergy and the emerging middle classes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1763<\/h2>\n<p>At this time Michael Haydn lived on the top floor of the Stiftskeller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1803<\/h2>\n<p>The Stiftskeller is awarded the right to brew and serve beer. Previously, the monks of the Stiftskeller had only been allowed to serve their own wines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1809<\/h2>\n<p>French troops are assigned quarters in the Stiftskeller during the Napoleonic wars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1903<\/h2>\n<p>Abbot Willibald Hauthaler oversees the construction of the Baroque Hall and expansion of the \u2018Willibaldh\u00f6hle\u2019 vault<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1918<\/h2>\n<p>The monastery cellar is looted during the First World War.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1992<\/h2>\n<p>At 25 years of age Claus Haslauer takes on a major challenge, becoming the first ever leaseholder of St Peter\u2019s Stiftskeller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1996<\/h2>\n<p>World premi\u00e8re of the famous Mozart Dinner Concerts in the historic Baroque Hall. These have since enjoyed great popularity and are performed daily.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">1999<\/h2>\n<p>Veronika Kirchmair-Haslauer begins to update and redesign the restaurant\u2019s interiors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">2003<\/h2>\n<p>The Stiftskeller celebrates its 1200th anniversary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag right-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">2008<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Extensive conversion work ensures the kitchen and taproom infrastructure at St. Peter\u2019s Stiftskeller becomes state of the art.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container-ag left-ag\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2 class=\"timeline-head\">2010<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">St Paul Soul Food Catering joins the St Peter Stiftskeller family.
